SMILE - 1983

VIDEO — DURATION: 4:00

In this award-winning video Allen continued her exploration of novel dance movement by working with breakdancers from the newly emerging breakdance scene in NYC. Allen combines live breakdancers, whose images are manipulated using one of the earliest digital synthesizers, with Bauhaus Theater inspired, computer generated breakdancing partners made of colorful geometric forms, dancing in elegant style.

In 1983, before the traditional artworld would accept experimental digital films, Allen’s work was presented extensively on music video TV channels such as MTV and dance clubs with new large-screen projections, receiving wide international reception and acclaim.
